It was hard to think about anything last night but the haunting, gorgeous debut of Taylor Swift's "Safe & Sound" video...but somewhere in between watching that amazing end-of-the-world lullaby on continuous repeat, MTV did find the time to chat with Taylor herself about the process of penning the song and about the books that started it all. And one of the best questions came straight from a fan on Twitter, who asked: What would Taylor's strategy be if she found herself in the real-life "Hunger Games"?
Turns out, Taylor is just like all the rest of us in that she's already asked herself the same question plenty of times: "I've thought about this, because reading the books, you're so sucked into it that as you go about your life," she said. "You sit there, and you're like, 'Could I climb that tree?' 'Could I make a weapon out of this?' 'If I had to forage for food, what would I do?'"
The answer? No surprises here: The country superstar is more a lover than a fighter, and she wasn't afraid to own up that she'd pretty much chicken out in the midst of the Games quicker than you can say "Haymitch."
"Honestly, I think I would just be the person who runs and hides," she admitted.
But even though her own Hunger Games strategy would be more "girl on the run" than "girl on fire," she still devoured the books with all the ferocity of a newborn fan—and as she fell in love with the story, she said, her understanding of what sort of song she'd be writing for the film underwent a serious shift.
"When I got the call, I thought from what I'd heard about the movie, 'It's an action movie, right? We're probably going to be writing a song that's like, We're going to win!'" she said. "And then I read the book, and I thought, 'No, we're going to have to write sort of a death lullaby, it's so different from what I thought.'"
And now, she said, she's just as anxious as all the rest of us to see "The Hunger Games" brought to life on the big screen.
