When it comes to "The Vampire Diaries" we're always full of questions and thankfully, Nina Dobrev was on hand to answer some more of them for us on Sunday. What's going to happen with "The Vampire Diaries" steamy love triangle? Will Elijah's interest in Elena Gilbert turn it into a romantic rectangle? And who knew Klaus could develop a soft spot for anyone, let alone Miss Mystic Falls herself, Caroline? These were our burning Q's for Nina at the annual Oscars party thrown by Elton John and producer husband David Furnish where, looking just as ravishing on the red carpet as on that recent Entertainment Weekly cover series, our favorite Petrova Doppelgänger cheerfully dished to Hollywood Crush.
When we last saw Elena, she was still broken up with emotionally repressed Stefan and had driven Damon so far away that he (quite deliciously) hooked up with Rebekah in retaliation. "Elena is in between Salvatores, [but] she's always kind of in-between Salvatores," Nina pointed out. "She always has been, now especially, she's kind of torn between the two. And she's not spoken for necessarily by one or the other. So it's an interesting dynamic."
Will the tenderness and subtle affection that's somewhat surprisingly developed between Elena and Elijah complicate things? Showrunner Julie Plec has told us these developments grew from the writers' own affection for the guy who plays the allegiance-shifting Original, Daniel Gillies, but there's no clear indication where it's headed. "I wouldn't say there's a love interest," Nina told us, adding, "I guess we'll see what develops in the future though."
Speaking of evolving villains, the interest Niklaus Mikaelson has taken in Caroline (That dress! That bracelet! That drawing!) certainly surprised many viewers who had written off the Original family's dark horse (pun intended) as entirely evil through and through. "We're starting to see a little bit more of Klaus and a little bit different layers and sides of him," Nina explained. "He's a person whose more emotional and he's starting to fall for Caroline, and giving her some protection so it's very—I never thought I would see the day where Klaus would have a soft spot for anyone."
As for Nina's own evolution, the Elton John party marked the 23-year-old "Degrassi: The Next Generation" veteran's first Academy Awards-related experience. "It's my first ever Oscar anything to actually attend," she enthused. "I mean, I've been watching for years like everyone else. But it was very different to get to my hair and make-up team, get ready and watch the Oscars on the carpet and then come to Elton's party and have dinner with all these amazing people that I admire and love, so it's cool."
Following smaller parts in "Chloe" and "The Roommate" (with fellow CW star Leighton Meester), the master of the dual roles of sweet-but-strong Elena and evil vampire Katherine Pierce will be making more of a jump to the world of movies soon with the forthcoming "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," alongside Paul Rudd and Emma Watson. The movie was written and directed by the novel's author, Stephen Chbosky. Nina hasn't seen the finished cut yet, but she'd prefer to wait until it hits theaters. "I did [additional dialog recording] for it, so I saw little bits and pieces. It's actually really cool, but I don't want to jinx it. I'm just gonna wait until it comes out…I want to see it. I know a lot of other people are excited to see it as well."
