SPOILER ALERT: Stop reading now if you haven't watched the "The Vampire Diaries" season three finale! (And if you haven't, what are you waiting for?!)
Of all of the gigantic moments of season three of "The Vampire Diaries," the biggest was of course Elena's transformation. Fans of the books had long anticipated the moment Elena Gilbert would become a vampire, something the television series drew out deliciously as the writers added layer upon layer of character and story before arriving at this pivotal impasse. Damon will blame Matt, Stefan will blame himself—bottom line is that arguably nobody in Mystic Falls will be happy about it.
When Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley dropped by our studio at San Diego Comic-Con, the super trinity of supernatural hotness talked to us in detail about season three's final moments of shocking awesomeness and what it will mean when season four kicks off October 11. Last week we showed you what they had to say about the consequences of Elena's compelled-away memories returning to her in her vampire state, which is a neat little side-effect in the show's mythology.
We've seen Caroline and Matt deal with the blood cravings, heightened senses, exaggerated emotions and all of the other complications that arrive when somebody reawakens in an undead state. Now it's time for the young girl who possesses the hearts of both Salvatore brothers to have a turn dealing with the fanged life.
Ian teased us by hinting at the various possibilities for Elena. "What's actually going to be really interesting is to see what now happens with this one," Ian said, pointing at Nina as Paul looked on. "And sort of the flood of emotion and the flood of desire to feed and how all of that is going to play out with her.
"Obviously Elena is a very, very well-rounded individual. And she's also experienced a lot," he noted, referencing all of the growths, twists and turns we've seen Elena go through since we first met her as a sad but strong high-schooler reeling from the death of her parents in a car accident. She's since lost even more people, including her aunt and the teacher-turned-vampire-slayer who became her guardian. She's met her vampire doppelganger. She's been pursued by nasty Originals.
So what's next? How will things play out in season four for Elena the Vampire?
"Once this top is popped off of this bottle, who knows how violent it's going to be?" Ian wondered.
How do you think Elena will fare as a vampire? Sound off in the comments and on Twitter!
