Not gonna lie: Even though we know that the Volturi are sadistic, shifty, murderous jerks with a well-developed taste for carnage to go with their impeccable manners, and even though we know we're supposed to be rooting for Team Cullen, and only Team Cullen, during the final showdown in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," we can't help having a bit of a soft spot in our hearts for Aro—Volturi head honcho, expert manipulator and owner of the best evil-guy laugh ever to grace the silver screen. So when we finally got the chance to chat with Michael Sheen, the man behind the monster, we were dying to hear about his take on playing the one character in the saga who everyone loves to hate! Which, if such a thing is even possible, made us love to hate him even more.
"I sort of figure, if you're playing someone who is centuries old—millennia old—then one of the biggest problems is boredom," he explained.
Yep, that's right: According to Michael, the real secret inspiration behind Aro's sadistic behavior is that really, the guy's just looking for a way to stay engaged, y'know?
"Everyone thinks it's kind of great to live forever, but you'd just get really bored," Michael continued. "One of the things I really love about Aro is that he does things to amuse himself, and keep himself interested in what's going on."
And when it comes to how he feels about the Cullens? Michael's got the dish on that, too.
"He just loves to see the young people enjoying themselves!" he said...then admitted: "And then underneath, he just wants to eat them."
Which, to quote a certain favorite someone, is just — a-HA-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!—remaaaaaahhhhhrkable.
Do you agree with Michael's take on Aro's motivations?
