When MTV News compiled its list of the Top 20 Newsmakers of 2012, it came as no surprise that Bella Swan and her vampire coven bit into the No. 1 spot for most click-worthy story of the year. After all, "The Twilight Saga" has been a part of the pop-culture consciousness for more than four years, bringing with it a fangirl army stronger than the most ravenous of newborn bloodsuckers. And as the sun set on the film franchise in November, with the premiere of "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," it ended not with a whimper but a bang. To wit, here's our GIF Guide to the year in "Twilight":
A relatively quiet first quarter concluded with the debut trailer for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," in which newly turned Bella seemed to be making her case for a Nike endorsement.
In May, we sunk our teeth into new character posters featuring Bella (Kristen Stewart), Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner), and we were all:
For the fourth year in a row, Rob and Kristen took home the MTV Movie Awards Golden Popcorn for Best Kiss, though, sadly, KStew had to make out with herself to celebrate.
Two weeks later, we got our first look at a longer "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" trailer. Renesmee!
(Though, we didn't get to see that much of her face just yet...)
And then—GASP!—tragedy struck! Kristen was photographed kissing her "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders. And we ate all the Ben & Jerry's alongside Rob.
But the two have since reconciled, so PHEW.
With a little more than two months until the film's premiere, Summit served up a final look at "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," in which newly turned Bella seemed to be making her case against mountain lions.
But that was hardly the most surprising moment when the movie finally debuted in November. Though we had been warned of a twist ending, we were hardly prepared for this:
