"Vampire Diaries" fans weren't the only ones caught off guard by Hayley's unexpected pregnancy, revealed recently during the back-door pilot for "The Originals." To wit, the werewolf's real-life alter ego, Phoebe Tonkin, was just as surprised when she was handed a copy of the script.
"It was definitely left field," she told Hollywood Crush at The CW Upfronts on Thursday. "I didn't expect that to be the big plot twist of the pilot at all. I spent a lot of time before that thinking, 'What could it be? What could the show be about?' And when I read that I was like, 'That's good, Julie [Plec]. That's a good one.' It's cool. It just kind of changes the tone of the show a lot."
As to how Hayley will fit into the Mikaelson clan as the mother of Klaus' child, Hayley wasn't certain, but she did acknowledge that the Originals have a lot to lose if things go poorly.
"I don't think Hayley and Klaus planned on being together more than that one night, so it's going to be interesting to see how they deal with the situation," she said. "Obviously, the stakes are high because the witches are out to basically blackmail Klaus into helping them by using my character and my child... It's going to be interesting to see how they deal with it."
Truer words, Phoebe. Truer words.
"The Originals" will air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
