Without fail our weekly dose of "Pretty Little Liars" always leaves our jaws dropped, and last night’s summer finale was no exception. As the name suggests, “Now You See Me, Now You Don’t” was filled with magic, deception and that time our hearts were broken by Mr. Fitz!
We can’t believe we’re actually going to say it, but Ezra is A and Alison just might actually be alive! The last few minutes of the episode revealed two of the biggest cliffhangers in “Pretty Little Liars” history! More to come on this later, but for now let’s back up to figure out exactly how it happened.
A seemed to have developed a new hobby this week—shipping large brown paper packages to our pretty little liars. The first: four Magic 8 Balls together reading, "She goes free you'll hear from me. Kisses. A." Of course, this could not have come at a worse time, as Ashley Marin was then released from jail due to Travis’ good word. Unfortunately, A’s threat left Hanna and her mom no time to celebrate as package No. 2 arrived shortly thereafter.
This one took scary to a whole new level, revealing a child-size coffin with a Mona look alike doll inside! “Hannah wins. Mona loses. Find her before the cops or they'll think you killed her." Being that Mona somehow checked out of Radley, the girls proceeded to spread out to find her before A could strike while Ashley made plans of her own for a hot date with Pastor Ted—probably the only uplifting moment in the entire episode!
With Mona nowhere to be found the girls retreated to be with their loved ones for the evening, at least until Jake fell asleep watching a movie with Aria. As per usual, Aria found herself struggling with her love life as Jake’s flaws reminded her of her perfectly compatible relationship with Ezra. The doubt led Aria to find Ezra at the coffee shop where talking lead to coffee, which lead to cozying up on the couch, which led to the moment we’ve all been waiting for —an actual Ezria kiss! But we weren’t the only ones watching, Red Coat (most likely, CeCe Drake?) was spotted in the window getting a peak at the rekindled relationship.
The next morning, package No. 3 showed up at the Hastings household. Luckily, Spencer used one of her magic tricks from arts camp to open the box, revealing a giant saw which read, “Watch me make a girl disappear. Kisses. A.” As if the Mona coffin wasn’t creepy enough! From this point it was clear that A had a little magic up her sleeve and that our pretty little liars weren’t just the audience, but her props! So naturally they thought it would be a good idea to head to Ravenswood to search for A at The Great Carlemagne’s performance.
With no time wasted the masked magician called up Aria to be used in a disappearing act, but in an unexpected twist Aria made it out of the box only to find Emily now missing! Right on cue, Spencer, Aria and Hanna’s phones rang to a text reading “leger de main”—which we can only assume is French for Emily’s life is in danger!
How right we were! Emily then woke up to find herself stuck in a coffin heading towards a giant saw! The girls rushed to her rescue, but not without help from Red Coat who turned off the saw causing the girls to look just in time to spot a second Red Coat dashing up the stairs. While Spencer went after the first Red Coat, Aria chased CeCe up the stairs where they dueled it out (finally putting Aria’s new kick-ass skills to use)! CeCe, in a panic, jumped from the railing and slipped from Aria’s grasp landing flat on the floor.
But just when the girls thought that was the last they’d seen of CeCe, they turned around to find she’d taken off again.
So, now to the good stuff! Spencer immediately took the girls to show what she has found—A’s lair! The apartment was filled with blown up pictures of Alison, timelines of every character we’ve ever met and even a giant police monitor explaining exactly how A has been able to know where they were at all times. And that’s not all! It turns out that A might be a boy after all, and it wasn’t Wren!
In the collection of timelines pasted on the wall, they come across evidence that A is actually after Red Coat and has plans to find Alison at the party in Ravenswood that night! On their way out of the apartment, the girls had a run in with the freaky Mrs. Grumwald who admitted that she lied about not knowing Ali, and she also has a sixth sense that lead her to find Ali in the ground the night of her attack. Mrs. Grumwald explained that Ali is alive and does not want to be found! With no other choice, Spencer, Emily, Hanna and Aria decided they were going to sneak into the party and find Alison themselves.
Just when we thought it was over, the camera revealed a tall man dressed in black standing in A’s lair. But it wasn’t just any man. It was Ezra! And as the magic of “Now You See Me, Now You Don’t” came to an end, the word #EzrA flashed on the television screen!
Is Ezra officially A? It would seem so! Is Alison actually alive? We hope so! Are the girls going to dress up for the Halloween episode in the most gorgeous and fashionable costumes? Absolutely!
As huge PLL fanatics we’ve learned not to trust that everything is as it seems! Of course we have no choice but to tune in this Halloween for the new episode (shout out to the writers for some amazing cliffhangers), and how very fitting that “Ravenswood” will premiere right after. We could not be more excited.
Are you buying that Ezra is A? What did you think of the summer finale? Spill it all in the comments and on Twitter!
