The oft-pondered question of who would play curmudgeonly author Peter Van Houten in the big-screen adaptation of John Green's "The Fault in Our Stars" has finally been answered. Willem Dafoe has landed the role, rounding out the cast of the currently in-production project.
Director Josh Boone took to Twitter today to announce the news himself, writing: "One of my favorite actors, Willem Dafoe, will play Peter Van Houten in #tfiosmovie!"
"The Fault in Our Stars" centers around teen cancer patient Hazel Grace Lancaster (played by Shailene Woodley), who meets and falls in love with fellow Cancer Kids Support Group member Augustus Waters (played by Ansel Elgort). Van Houten's novel, "An Imperial Infliction," is referenced early on as Hazel's favorite book, and without giving too much away, the author plays an important role in Hazel and Augustus' love story.
For those of us who came of age in the '90s and '00s, Willem will forever be linked to the role of James Franco's dad/the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" movies, but I've got a hunch the prolific actor will soon become iconic to a whole new generation as Van Houten.
