Happy Monday to us! The CW announced today that they're renewing "The Vampire Diaries" for a fifth season. Not that we're surprised or anything, but it's always nice to know that the network is fully behind one of our favorite shows. Now all they need to do is announce the pickup of "Vampire Diaries" spinoff "The Originals", and we can be pre-excited for the fall TV season.
Along with the "Diaries" renewal, the CW also announced early pickups of other fan favorites "Supernatural" (which will enter its ninth season) and a season two order of freshman hit "Arrow." The network clearly knows when it's got a good thing going; all three shows will continue to air in their current time slots next fall.
No matter how flattering or impressive it may be to be named People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive," the title has its latest honoree, Channing Tatum, feeling a bit bashful, particularly because just before he was announced as the new "Sexiest Man" he was named one of GQ's "Men of the Year," which according to Channing has resulted in a lot of harassment—and not the good kind.
"It's more ammunition for my friends to do stuff to my face on magazines and then send it to me," Channing told MTV News recently during an interview for his new thriller "Side Effects," co-starring Rooney Mara. The "Magic Mike" star explained that he'll receive a bunch of alerts on his phone which he thinks are going to be funny emails from his friends, but the funny is always focused on defacing his sexy photos.
Confession: I am not a fan of zombies. They are generally gross looking, make creepy noises and appear to smell really bad. But much to my pleasant surprise, the undead folk in "Warm Bodies" are a different story, specifically this week's Hump Day Hottie Nicholas Hoult. The fact that I found myself wanting to be hugged by zombie R halfway through the movie was a new experience indeed.
So how'd they pull that off? How do you make zombies cute? MTV News sought out "Warm Bodies" makeup artist Adrien Morot for the answer—the short version being cast a handsome actor to play a zombie—plus a few bonus facts about how he and Nicholas made the most out of their many hours together in the makeup chair.
As we've mentioned before, 2013 is shaping up to be a great year for literary adaptions, particularly for YA novels. And even though there are plenty of those adaptations already in the can and scheduled to be released this year, we can't help but look forward to a few that haven't even started filming yet, like the big-screen version of John Green's "The Fault in Our Stars," which is being produced by "Twilight" and "Safe Haven" duo Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.
MTV News recently caught up with the two gentlemen during a press day for their Nicholas Sparks adaptation and persuaded them to reveal a few details about the project.
Highlights from the conversation include the following: Everyone loves the script, written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber ("(500) Days of Summer"), every actress we'd hope would be interested in the role apparently is, and they're really close to choosing a director.
Happy "Prodigy" release day! How excited are you to find out what happens to our star-crossed protagonists June and Day in Marie Lu's "Legend" sequel? We've been enthused for a while now having named the book one of our most-anticipated releases of the year—even if we're pretty sure that we won't get the whole story told in this book, since trilogies are all the rage these days.
Jumping back into Marie's carefully and creatively crafted world reminds us how much we'd like to see that big-screen version of "Legend" that's cooking over at Temple Hill, the same production company behind "Twilight." Thankfully MTV News had the opportunity to score some inside info about the film from producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen recently during a press day for their next flick, the Nicholas Sparks adaptation "Safe Haven."
The good news: Things are moving along as interest in the book continues to grow, and they want to faithfully recreate Marie's vision. The bad news: It's going to be a while before we see a finished film.
If you've seen the ads for "Warm Bodies"—or our weekly posts dedicated to the film—you're likely aware of the fact that Nicholas Hoult's character R doesn't do much talking out loud since he's a zombie, and zombies can't really communicate verbally aside from an occasional raspy grunt or moan. As such, that left Nicholas and co-star Teresa Palmer (Julie) engaged in an interesting and unbalanced acting exercise that had Teresa delivering the majority of the dialogue, while Nicholas reacted with his eyes and some sluggish body movement.
It's hard enough trying to approach someone you like, but can you imagine trying to get to know your crush if you couldn't speak to him or her? According to Teresa, however, Nicholas made it easy because he was so good at wearing his heart in his eyes.
"It was interesting. I thought it was going to be very challenging because I speak so much in the movie and Nicholas Hoult, who plays R, the undead guy I fall in love with, he really cannot express himself or communicate apart from a few grunts and groans," Teresa explained. "But he does a good job of expressing himself through his eyes and his body language—he gave me a lot still."
In thinking about all the romantic hardships our "Pretty Little Liars" seem to continually endure, it's surprising to see the cute couples keeping on. After all, love is a battlefield, people (shout-out, Pat Benatar!) or perhaps a more timely comparison would be something by Taylor Swift?
But we digress! Back to the unlucky-in-love liars: According to star Ashley Benson, her character, Hanna, will actually be having a lot of good moments with Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) this season.
"Hanna and Caleb are actually really happy this season. I think the fans are going to be super-excited about that," Ashley told MTV News recently. "They're better than they have been."
Only three little weeks left until "Warm Bodies" finally hits theaters! Have you purchased your tickets yet? Maybe you need some incentive via another one of our extra-special EXCLUSIVES leading up to opening day on February 1. Today's treat is a one-two punch that includes a never-before-seen photo of R (Nicholas Hoult), as well as the unveiling of the music featured in the film.
In this new still, we see a solemn-looking R hunched over a record player in his humble abode, which is an abandoned airplane. What I like most about this photo is that it's so colorful. Sure we've seen some color in previous images, but there's something different about this one in that it doesn't seem as bleak—it's more sweet and sentimental. It's also a perfect complement to the second part of our "Warm Bodies" goodness: news about the music featured in the film.
We're just one day away from our exclusive online and on-air premiere of the trailer for "Spring Breakers," and what better way to continue the countdown than with a shiny new photo of the lovely "Breakers" in question?
Behold, an EXCLUSIVE still of the film's four beautiful bikini-clad stars Ashley Benson, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Rachel Korine. Now, even though the girls seem to be happy and mugging for the camera here, this photo was taken from a scene in which our leading ladies find themselves tossed in a jail cell after a particularly long day and night of partying. And if you're thinking you've seen these bikinis before, you have. The starlets spend a decent portion of the movie in those swimsuits. (Must have made it easy for the wardrobe department, huh?)
Because of all the drama and the constant state of suspense in which our "Pretty Little Liars" find themselves, it seems as though the only thing to be surprised about in regards to their storylines is when they have moments of actual happiness. I mean, it's not like they're little angels or anything, but it would be nice to see them relax and smile and laugh a bit more, right?
Thanks to a recent conversation with star Shay Mitchell, it seems as though we might get our wish—at least part of it.
"There is going to be moments of happiness for all the girls," Shay told Hollywood Crush. "Mona is back and they're all trying to suss out if she is really being good now and if things have changed with her, but I do feel though that each of the girls will have a little bit of happiness in there."
