It didn't take much for us to be interested in HBO's new comedy "Girls." First, it's a half-hour comedy that revolves around single women in their 20s living in New York City, which reminds us of another show that HBO did really well that we liked a lot. Second, the trailer is awesome.
With the show's April premiere date quickly approaching, the network sent creator/executive producer/writer/star Lena Dunham to Austin, Texas, to screen a couple episodes in front of the receptive SXSW crowds. MTV News was all over the event, where we spoke with Lena about the inspiration for the show and the very awkward sexual situations her character finds herself in during the first episode.
"Definitely a lot is true to life," Lena said of her source material. "It definitely is a lot of experiences that I, my friends, my writing staff have had, and then taking some of that experience to their more dramatic conclusions. It's always nice when you can give a real-life experience a movie ending and tie up some loose ends you weren't able to in the moment."
Ladies, do you know that the most magical day of the year is just 109 days away? I'm talking about June 29, of course, the release date of my most-anticipated movie this year: "Magic Mike." And not to narrow down the group of excited individuals to just one gender, but come on, this movie is for us. Actor-executive producer Channing Tatum can talk all he wants about the male stripper film being for everyone, but I know better.
When MTV News caught up with Channing's co-star Matthew McConaughey recently at the SXSW premiere of "Killer Joe," we asked him to tease a little about who his character, nightclub owner/male revue ringleader Dallas, really is.
"Well, I run the hottest male revue in America, if not the globe," he said of Dallas. "And we are going to simulcast around not only the globe, but the universe, and become the hottest male revue in the universe."
If you've been watching Fox's new hit comedy "New Girl," you're well aware that despite the series being built around star Zooey Deschanel, the male cast members are no slouches either. In fact, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris and Max Greenfield are my absolute favorites. Total scene-stealers.
With that in mind, the following video needs little set-up except that MTV News got to spend a few quality minutes with the cast before their PaleyFest panel recently, and hilarity ensued. Along with a near-death experience.
"I think a true narcissist wants to please his partner in bed because he knows, he doesn't want to read poor reviews in the paper the next day," Max said when asked how/why his character Schmidt became a stud in the sack. "Can you imagine that? It takes a lot of work."
We would never want to condone infidelity, but let's be honest: Who among us hasn't considered (even for just a moment) which celebrity we'd want to knock boots with if given a free pass? Well, according to a just-released survey from Fitness Magazine and Yahoo! Shine, not only have women thought about it, but they know exactly who would be on their list. (Hint: The top men in question are Canadians named Ryan.)
Just when I'd gotten used to the fact that I was going to have to wait until August to see the big-screen adaptation of "Warm Bodies," Summit Entertainment has thrown a kink in my excitement by pushing the film's release back six months to February 1, 2013.
According to Variety, the February release date could be better for the film as it is, right now, the only wide release scheduled for that weekend and won't have as much competition.
"Warm Bodies" is based on Isaac Marion's novel of the same name and in a nutshell, is the story of a very unlikely romance between a zombie named R, played by Nicholas Hoult, and human named Julie, played by Teresa Palmer.
We still have quite awhile before "Warm Bodies" hits theaters next fall, but little by little we've been gathering enough information from leaked photos and the major players involved to get more and more excited about the big-screen adaptation of Isaac Marion's zombie romance.
During our recent chat about his upcoming SXSW debut, we asked Dave Franco for his take on the film, in which he plays teenager Perry Kelvin, a very curiously key character in the relationship between the story's central characters R and Julie.
"To be completely honest I was a little hesitant about it at first because it was another zombie movie and there have been a lot of those recently," Dave admitted. "The main reason I was excited about it was because of [director] Jonathan Levine. I am a huge fan of his. I loved “The Wackness” and of course “50/50,” but I knew that even though it was this genre we’ve seen over and over, I knew he’d bring his own take to it and make it interesting."
This one is for those of you who appreciate our weekly Hump Day Hottie feature, as well as those who love an adorable celeb couple. Not so long ago, we anointed "Suits" star Patrick J. Adams as our Hump Day Hottie, which led to two awesome things: First we learned that Patrick's real-life love interest is "Pretty Little Liars" star Troian Bellisario. Second, his "Suits" co-star Gabriel Macht was so overwhelmed by Patrick's honor that he felt the need to tweet a photo about how he was feeling about the whole thing. The chain of events was so fun that when I caught up with the Troian recently, I had to ask for her take.
"It was really funny. When he was the Hump Day Hottie, Gabriel Macht released that Twitpic, "Hump Day Nottie," and that tickled me pink, that was such a great response," she said. "It was definitely a great thing being able to walk around the apartment: 'Hump Day Hottie, could you pass me the coffee?' 'Hump Day Hottie, I left my phone in the other room could you Hump Day Hottie that over to me?' and he was just like, 'I hate you so much, would you stop that?' It was even better in public. That was great."
It has come to our attention that John Krasinski is an expert at being charming. Not only does he seem to play the most irresistibly delightful characters imaginable (see: Jim on "The Office," Ethan in "Something Borrowed," Phone Operator in "The Muppets") but he is equally, if not even more so, beguiling in person. And don't even get me started on how freakin' adorable and in love he and wife Emily Blunt are. It is too cute for words.
Being the inquisitive, truth-seeking journalist that I am, when I caught up with John recently to talk to him about his new save-the-whales movie "Big Miracle" (Spoiler alert: He plays a charming journalist!), I felt that it was my duty to try and get at the source of his success.
The actual question I posed to John, and by default to his "Miracle" co-star Drew Barrymore because she was seated next to him for the interview, was whether he could provide us with a detailed guide to being so consistently captivating.
This one is for all of our fellow Matthew Lewis (a.k.a. Neville Longbottom) fans—those who have been on board since the beginning after being drawn in by Matthew's roly poly adorableness at age 12 in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," and those who jumped on the bandwagon in a big way after seeing photos of Matthew all grown-up at last year's premiere of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."
We've lost count of the number of "Matt Lewis Is A Total Hottie"-themed fan pages that have been created since, but we're doing our part as well. MTV News was lucky enough to get our hands and eyes on a batch of brand new photos of the one-time Hump Day Hottie looking very grown-up and smoldery.
The photos were taken by acclaimed London-based photographer Idil Sukan, who was the official photographer for the British Independent Film Awards and has shot a slew of popular British stars, like The Wanted and Rebecca Ferguson. Just look at how serious and stylish the 22-year-old is! So thoughtful and focused, it's like he's staring into our souls. Or thinking really hard about something important like world peace or saving kittens.
Although Ryan Murphy and the rest of the gang behind "Glee" have kept the themed episodes to a minimum this season, we have a few to look forward to, including tonight's glittery Michael Jackson tribute and next week's spicy Spanish fiesta, guest starring former Bon Bon shaker Ricky Martin. When MTV News caught up with Naya Rivera at the SAG Awards on Sunday, we asked the actress to give us a few hints about the episode, aptly titled "The Spanish Teacher," as well as what might be in store for Santana.
"Ricky Martin was awesome, that was a dream come true," Naya said about working with the Grammy-winner. "We were all very, very excited for Ricky. I got to do a duet with him which was insane," she gushed. "He's a beautiful man, and I had my hands all over him."
