Welcome to another meeting of Hollywood Crush's Celebrity Book Club! With "The Vampire Diaries" kicking off its fourth season tomorrow night, it seemed only right we check in with our favorite Mystic Falls residents to see what tomes are topping their list right now. Candice Accola, otherwise known as Vampire Barbie Caroline Forbes, was more than happy to share a Julie Plec-recommended read that's anything but sucky.
"I love to read," Candice enthused. "And right now I'm on my last hundred pages of 'The Corrections' by Jonathan Franzen, and I really enjoyed it. His writing is just—he's one of those writers where you just go, there are people just meant to be novel writers."
What better time to call to order another meeting of Hollywood Crush's Celebrity Book Club than during the dog days of summer? After all, this is prime reading time for beach bunnies and sun saluters vacationing in the sort of sumptuous tropical locales we can only dream about from our aggressively air-conditioned cubicles. Not that we're jelly or anything.
"Glee" star Amber Riley is one such starlet who's been getting in some reading during her hiatus from McKinley High, and in addition to "The Hunger Games" (which the entire cast apparently read together), the actress is in the middle of a novel very near and dear to co-star Chris Colfer. Because he wrote it!
"I read Chris Colfer's book," Amber said with a big grin. "He actually tried to give me the copy, like the copy he was passing around, but I really wanted to, like, invest and buy it, so I downloaded it and bought it. I've only gotten through the first chapter. Don't kill me, Chris! I'm gonna read it. It's really good."
The book is titled "The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell" and tells the tale of twins Alex and Connor Bailey, who magically find themselves transported to a fairytale land populated by all sorts of colorful creatures.
Beware: This week's edition of Celebrity Book Club is rated R for racy. But we'd expect nothing less from a pretty little liar.
When we caught up recently with Shay Mitchell to talk about the just-premiered third season of her hit ABC Family series, talk turned to her summer reading list, provoking a slightly red-faced response from the actress.
"I'm actually on the second book of '50 Shades of Grey.' Yes I am," she said with a laugh. "I'm reading a lot of different books, but I always think I have to switch it up a little bit. It's like food—everything in moderation, same with my books, same with my reading. You read books that are good for you and you learn a lot of stuff, then you read 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' which is like candy. Bad junk food. But it's good. But it's bad junk food."
It's time for another meeting of Hollywood Crush's Celebrity Book Club!
Dayo Okeniyi is no stranger to the best-seller list. He did star as tribute Thresh in the big-screen adaptation of "The Hunger Games," after all. But when we ran into the actor recently, we wanted to know what books not authored by Suzanne Collins he had resting on his nightstand.
"I've been reading 'The Alchemist' like every—four or five times a year," he revealed. "It's a life changer, one of those kinds of books. I'm a little obsessed with that book right now."
Plate those lemon squares and grab your Kindle because we are calling the inaugural meeting of Hollywood Crush's Celebrity Book Club to order. Welcome to our new lit-focused feature, where each week or so we'll politely hound your favorite stars for the contents of their reading lists. (Note: This is a no-judgment zone—all books are accepted!)
What better way to kick off our premiere post than with a young author herself: Miss Lauren Conrad? We caught up with the former "Hills" star recently while she toured the country to promote her brand-new novel "The Fame Game."
So what book is tucked into LC's carry-on?
"The book that I'm currently reading is the second 'Hunger Games' book, which is so unoriginal. I'm sure everyone on Earth is reading that right now because of the movie," she said. "The author does such a good job telling the story. It just sucks you in."
