It's been 15 years since the American literati first encountered the world of witches, wizards, house elves and sorting hats in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"... and like all 15-year-olds, the series has obviously been aching for a hip, new look to go with its newly mature status! Or at least, that's one possible explanation behind today's announcement from Scholastic that every Harry Potter book, beginning in September of this year, will be getting a trade paperback makeover in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the series' U.S. publication—with new original cover art by illustrator Kazu Kibuishi.
For those who grew up loving the Harry Potter series, and its amazing cover illustrations by Mary GrandPré, don't freak out: All the hardcover and digest paperback editions of the books will keep their original artwork. But Kibuishi, who's already known as an illustrator and graphic novelist with a serious gift for the fantastical (seriously, look at this stuff!), is clearly taking his duty to reboot the covers extremely seriously...as you can see, because the first one is already online. Oooh, and look at this lovely luminescent depiction of Harry's first trip to Diagon Alley! We particularly love Hagrid's super-stylin' shearling overcoat, which would certainly make him the HBOC at Hogwarts.
Does "Mortal Instruments" author Cassandra Clare ever sleep? Like, for serious? Between penning two (soon to be three!) best-selling series, consulting on the big-screen adaptation of "City of Bones," teaming with friend Holly Black for a middle-grade novel, and conceiving a Magnus Bane-focused spin-off, multitasking Cassie never seems to rest. (If they weren't hazardous to mere mortals, we'd guess she was juiced up by a bevy of anti-exhaustion runes.)
Now, ON TOP OF ALL THAT, Ms. Clare has eked out time to compile "The Shadowhunter's Codex" with the help of husband Joshua Lewis. And guess what! We have your EXCLUSIVE first look at the angelic cover!
If you follow all things Richelle Mead with a rabid bloodlust that'd make even a Strigoi jealous, then you know the big-screen adaptation of the author's thoroughly engrossing "Vampire Academy" has snagged itself three lead actors, including Zoey Deutch in the role of kick-butt Dhampir Rose Hathaway. So when we caught up with Zoey recently at a press event for her upcoming film "Beautiful Creatures," we just had to get her reaction to the big news.
"It's crazy. I'm so excited!" she enthused, while getting a rather off-target fist bump from co-star Thomas Mann.
And what of the screenplay penned by "Heathers" writer Daniel Waters?
Can't get enough of the "World of Jenks"? (Yeah...we figured.) You're in luck, because as we reported last summer, Andrew is penning a memoir about his adventures as a young filmmaker called, well, "Andrew Jenks: My Adventures as a Young Filmmaker." And though the volume isn't due until March, Hollywood Crush has an EXCLUSIVE sneak peek just for you in the form of a teaser trailer.
As you can see, Andrew's own photography, anecdotes and cherished memorabilia blend seamlessly into a riveting autobiography of the 26-year-old documentarian.
We've hardly heard a peep from "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" star Shailene Woodley since she was cast as heroine Beatrice "Tris" Prior in the big-screen adaptation of dystopian thriller "Divergent." Well, not anymore, seeing as we caught up with the star today at the Sundance Film Festival, where she was promoting her movie "The Spectacular Now."
So, first things first: What inspired Shailene to sign on for the role of the Dauntless factioner? We guarantee her answer is nothing you'd expect.
"I read the book, and I thought it was really—my whole thing, to be honest, is I never wanted to do big films," she explained. "I've been acting for 16 years, and it was never something that I wanted to do, to be in a big blockbuster film, especially one that was similar to 'Hunger Games' or 'Twilight.' You know, one that had a huge pre-existing fan base and one that would carry on for multiple years."
A few months ago, Selena Gomez gave a red-carpet interview in which she gleefully warned us that her next project, the coming-this-March movie "Spring Breakers," was gonna shock the bejeezus out of everyone who knew her strictly as a Disney-Channel teen sensation. And after today's EXCLUSIVE debut of the film's first trailer on MTV News...uh, yeah, our bejeezus has left the building. This is a side of Selena we've never seen before: dangerously sexy, seriously unbalanced, and bored to the point of violence. Check out the trailer and let your eyes pop, yo.
There's so much going on here, from the bikini quartet (including Selena plus co-stars Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine), to the smash-cut violence, to a palette that's all candy-colored bathing suits and trashy neon lights, to James Franco's grill. Let's just say that again: JAMES FRANCO'S GRILL. (Also, his panhandle accent is either the most brilliant or most revolting thing we've ever heard. Maybe both.) Add in a heavy dubstep soundtrack and a "Field-of-Dreams"-esque whisper—"Spring break!"—and you've got the promise of a movie that's gritty, seductive, and out-of-control; it's no wonder that the leading ladies all described their on-set experience as raw and boundary-pushing. By the end of the trailer, "Spring break forever!" sounds less like a battle cry than a life sentence.
Only three little weeks left until "Warm Bodies" finally hits theaters! Have you purchased your tickets yet? Maybe you need some incentive via another one of our extra-special EXCLUSIVES leading up to opening day on February 1. Today's treat is a one-two punch that includes a never-before-seen photo of R (Nicholas Hoult), as well as the unveiling of the music featured in the film.
In this new still, we see a solemn-looking R hunched over a record player in his humble abode, which is an abandoned airplane. What I like most about this photo is that it's so colorful. Sure we've seen some color in previous images, but there's something different about this one in that it doesn't seem as bleak—it's more sweet and sentimental. It's also a perfect complement to the second part of our "Warm Bodies" goodness: news about the music featured in the film.
We're just one day away from our exclusive online and on-air premiere of the trailer for "Spring Breakers," and what better way to continue the countdown than with a shiny new photo of the lovely "Breakers" in question?
Behold, an EXCLUSIVE still of the film's four beautiful bikini-clad stars Ashley Benson, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Rachel Korine. Now, even though the girls seem to be happy and mugging for the camera here, this photo was taken from a scene in which our leading ladies find themselves tossed in a jail cell after a particularly long day and night of partying. And if you're thinking you've seen these bikinis before, you have. The starlets spend a decent portion of the movie in those swimsuits. (Must have made it easy for the wardrobe department, huh?)
Hear that, princess? It's the screaming...of a thousand "Hunger Games" fangirls having the greatest flailing freakout of their lives. Because a pile of "Catching Fire" stills hit our inbox today, along with a brand new flaming Mockingjay poster for the upcoming film.
And in that pile: a look at each of the series' sexiest gentleman characters in action! Whether you pine for Peeta, go crazy for Gale, or fancy District 4's Finnick Odair, there's a delicious buffet of man-meat awaiting. Unless you like Haymitch, of course, in which case you're out of luck, but you're also a weirdo who likes lank-haired men with booze breath and hammertoes. Look at your life! Look at your choices!
But first, look at this! Among the new pics from the long-awaited sequel to last year's dystopian blockbuster: one ever-so-slightly-steamy-looking shot of Finnick and Katniss, in which the trident-wielding golden boy appears to be whispering sweet nothings into our heroine's ear. (Also: Those who doubted Sam Claflin's ability to play the Games' flirtiest tribute with an appropriate level of panache, take a look at that smirk and prepare to eat crow.)
Your Blu-ray/DVD collection will get a serious "Twilight" bite on March 2. Because in addition to the previously announced extended edition of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" (boasting EIGHT ADDITIONAL MINUTES OF FOOTAGE), Lionsgate has revealed that the home video version of the franchise's finale, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," will drop the same day!
All together now: FAAAAAANGTASTIC!
Available for pre-order today, the release features a slew of behind-the-scenes extras and sneak peeks (we'd expect nothing less). In addition to audio commentary from director Bill Condon, fans can look forward to a seven-part making-of documentary titled "Forever: Filming 'Breaking Dawn - Part 2,'" plus Green Day's "The Forgotten" music video, a "Two Movies at Once" featurette and a jump function that allows you to skip to your favorite Edward Cullen or Jacob Black moments. All in all, a fitting conclusion for our beloved vegetarian vamps.
