"But is it scary?" I asked rather sheepishly.
Having never cut my teeth on Anne Rice, or soaked in the suds of Sookie Stackhouse, I was anything but fang-friendly when a photo editor colleague at Entertainment Weekly recommended I read a buzzy bloodsucker series penned by Stephenie Meyer. But after a splashy cover story (for which Robert Pattinson famously posed as the love child of Fabio and Donald Trump), my curiosity could not be denied. And I bit into "Twilight."
It was 2008, and I had moved to the city a few months earlier to pursue a career in magazine journalism. Little did I know as I paged past the lacquered black cover and into the depths of Edward and Bella's star-crossed romance how pivotal the series would prove to my career path.
As one of only a handful of dot-com writers who had—at that point—become intimately acquainted with the goings on in Forks, Washington, I became one of the go-to scribes for all things related to the series, which provided many more writing opportunities and reporting outings than the average intern would have dreamt of. One of my most cherished memories from that time speaks to just how nichey the saga scene was before the "Twilight" film debuted later that year.
With this month marking the release of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," the media landscape has turned into a markedly more bloodthirsty version of Old MacDonald's famous farm—with sparkly members of the Cullen family popping up here, there and everywhere. (Insert your E-I-E-I-O refrain here.) And few of the cast members from the saga have been more ubiquitous than the Ashley Greene, whose supporting role as Alice has given her just as much star status as if she'd headlined the films along with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Her latest appearance? It's in Seventeen, where her photo shoot showcased a series of fun, colorful looks and featured the actress perched on a carousel! And inside, she happily dished with her interviewer on relationship drama, her evolving style sense and bidding good old Alice Cullen a fond farewell.
Of course, the relationship drama everyone's really wondering about isn't Ashley's; the much-discussed saga of Robsten is still on everyone's mind, but Ashley was characteristically cagey about any mention of her costars' romance. The one thing she would say? That she hopes the whirlwind of gossip surrounding the film's headliners won't ruin the franchise for the people to whom it matters most: the fans.
After three weeks of biting, clawing and sparkling their way to the top, it all comes down to this: vampire loves Edward Cullen and Bella Swan face off for the title of No. 1 "Twilight" character in MTV News' epic Twi-Fight Saga! The newlyweds have easily undone their competition in each of the five rounds, meaning this—the Championship Round—could be anyone's game.
Along the way, we've had a handful of "Twilight" experts weigh in with their picks, and we've offered our own round-by-round commentary, but it's really all up to you! Voting concludes today at 6 p.m. ET, with the winner to be announced shortly thereafter. All of which means, you best pick a side and cast your ballot before it's too late!
From the outside looking in, being a working actor or trying to be one seems like far too much of a headache to give it any serious thought. (At least from my perspective, that is.) The road to fame and fortune is more often than not a rocky one, paved with more No's than Yes's.
MTV's new show "This Is How I Made It" is an exploration of some of those challenges in the biz, and this week's episode features a story of how "Teen Wolf" star Tyler Posey almost ended up in "Twilight."
Bad news, everyone: There's only one more week until "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" hits theaters. While some of you might consider this a good thing, we here at MTV News are mourning the fact that we only have seven days left until the final "Twilight" movie comes out (well, final "Twilight" movie for the time being).
Fortunately, we've got you covered if you've got the "Twilight" blues like we do. We've planned the mother of all "Twilight" interview marathons for you this weekend, hosted by none other than our favorite "Twilight" interviewer, Josh Horowitz. He'll be manning a "Twilight" Takeover on November 10 and 11 on MTV that includes moments from his most recent "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" interview, going all the way back to the first few times we chatted with the cast back in 2008. Find out more about what will be included after the jump.
MTV News' Twi-Fight Saga continues with round five, in which 4 of Stephenie Meyer's vampires will do battle for the title of No. 1 "Twilight" character. Each round a "Twilight" expert will weigh in on who she thinks will take the entire tournament. Today, Laura Byrne Cristiano of Twilight Lexicon shares her pick for victor.
Well, it looks like what most people predicted, an Edward and Bella showdown, is what the final round has come down to. There were some surprises. Personally, I'm still getting over Jacob getting taken out by Quil! Seriously, how did that happen? Now it's down to choosing between our favorites, Edward and Bella.
As the big-screen iteration of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight Saga" draws to an end, it seems the fanfic her series inspired is about to enjoy its own moment in the sun.
To wit, E L James' erotic novel, "Fifty Shades of Grey," and its sequels have already sold more than 60 million copies worldwide, with a film version in the works. And, just yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that another Twific "The Office" (retitled "Beautiful Bastard") will be making its way to bookstore shelves soon. Indeed, it's a good time to be a fan-fiction writer. All of which got us wondering which other "Twilight" takeoffs are worthy of prime placement at Barnes & Noble. We reached out to several in-the-know fanfic enthusiasts to get their opinions.

If it's not a coven of bloodthirsty vamps, it's a roving gang of Port Angeles hoodlums, or—even more embarrassingly—her own two left feet. Yes, whatever the danger, it seems "Twilight" protagonist Bella Swan is a magnet for it. Hence, the teen's need for 24-hour protection to rival our Commander in Chief's Secret Service detail. And we've got all the proof of this you need in the video below.
In anticipation of the film franchise's long-awaited finale, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," your fellow "Twilight" obsessives at MTV News took a gander at the saga's first four installments, making special note of all the moments Edward, Jacob and their ilk pledge their protection to Bella. And, boy, does it happen a lot!
See what we mean by clicking play on the video above. Save Bella—goodness knows she needs it...for now!
Leave it to Robert Pattinson to somehow work in the phrase "massage my butt cheek" into a recollection of all things "Twilight" during the junket for the film franchise's finale, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2."
You see, MTV News' Josh Horowitz wanted to spend a pleasant moment hearkening back to the very beginnings of the saga, and thusly asked Rob what he remembered from that first day of filming "Twilight."
"We were doing the fight scene at the end of the first one, and I tore my glute, well, almost tore it, basically in my second shot of the whole movie—of the whole series," the actor explained. "[They] had to get a physiotherapist to come in and massage my butt cheek for the rest of the day." (Hard job!)
We're not sure our "Twilight"-loving hearts can take this! After five fierce rounds of face-offs, only two vamps remain in MTV News' epic Twi-Fight Saga — and they're the last two we'd ever want to see battle! That's right; as you probably could have guessed, bloodsucking sweethearts Edward Cullen and Bella Swan are going head-to-head in the Championship Round. (Please give us a moment to compose ourselves...)
Okay! So, yeah. How does one choose between impossibly beautiful Edward and freshly fierce Bella? They're a package deal! They're inseparable! But, choose we must though. And so must you! Head on over to twilight.mtv.com to cast your ballot in the final round of The Twi-Fight Saga. Voting will continue through November 12, when the No. 1 "Twilight" character will finally be revealed!
