Call us biased, but after getting a look at last night's MTV Video Music Awards red carpet, we think it's safe to say that the VMAs are the best and boldest awards event ever—at least when it comes to the fashion on display! So many of our favorite stars were out last night, and sporting bold looks that eschewed conservative couture in favor of pushing the envelope in fun and fabulous directions. And indeed, some of them were auto-contenders for this week's Style Superstar. Whose gothic blondness nearly made us black out...with envy?

Miley Cyrus, the honor is all yours. The just-blonded-and-buzzed star gave her new hair its red-carpet debut with a sky-high style—call it Electric Fence Chic!—dressing up the punky look with a long-sleeved Emilio Pucci gown in matte black chiffon. Miley seems determined these days to define her unique style sense with a more grown-up red carpet look, and this one is right in line with the edgy vibe she's sported this summer: a dramatic neckline that showed off her womanly assets, sheer slim-line paneling, long sleeves and a wispy skirt that gives this evening gown a glam, gothic twist. Add in the glittering clutch, some dagger-shaped earrings and light pink lips, and her look is a shoo-in for Style Superstar!

Wedding planning can wait for Miley Cyrus. Though the songstress and fiance Liam Hemsworth have been engaged for three months, Miley is in no hurry to walk down the aisle, especially when there's new music to make, y'all!

MTV News caught up with the 19-year-old during last night's MTV Video Music Awards pre-show, where the starlet reminisced about her busy year and looked forward to her upcoming single.

"This year has been awesome," she enthused. "I told everyone 2012 was going to be my year, and it's been really good."

The obvious highlight is her betrothal to "Last Song" co-star Liam, who popped the question on May 31 with a 3.5-carat antique diamond, set in an 18-karat gold band by celebrity jeweler Neil Lane. But Miley won't be tamed just yet.

Stars Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Jackson Rathbone, Elizabeth Reaser and Peter Facinelli may have done the honors at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, presenting the final trailer for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," but Kristen Stewart's Bella Swan-Cullen is arguably the biggest butt-kicker in this clip.

The 90-second teaser opens much like the one that preceded it, with a newly turned Bella sprinting through the forests of Forks. But what we didn't see before was the bloodsucker bagging herself a big cat, in grand fashion. Later on, Bella's new-found strength is utilized in a WWE-worthy maneuver in which Edward lifts and swings her into a bunch of waiting baddies.

Songstress and "X Factor" judge Demi Lovato will be giving our hearts a break during tonight's MTV Video Music Awards pre-show when she takes the stage to perform her hit single, kicking off the star-studded ceremony. And when we caught up with Demi this week, we made sure to ask how she was preparing for the important task before her.

"You know, just making sure I'm well rested so I don't look like a hag when I step out on stage," the 20-year-old joked.

When pressed about her pre-show rituals, Demi revealed her own shortlist of artists who get her primed to perform. "There's some music I listen to that really pumps me up is 2 Chainz and Nicki Minaj, but not her pop stuff, like, her grimy stuff. I love it."

One of the things that clearly differentiates celebrities from mere humans: the ability to smile without really smiling, a look which gives stars a certain air of smug serenity (unless you're my grandma, in which case you think they look like they're embarrassed about their teeth). And it's a hard trick to pull off...as "Awkward" and "Teen Wolf" stars Molly Tarlov and Tyler Posey learned when they tried to practice their most composed-but-pleased faces for tonight's Video Music Awards.

"I want to work on perfecting the non-smile look," Molly confessed, though her ambitions were met with skepticism by Tyler.

"I always smile," he countered, saying the non-smile look doesn't do it for him. "I don't like that. I feel like that's weird."

Yes, the unthinkable has happened: McKayla Maroney, known for her internet-famous, shade-throwing indifference to everything from the Mars landing to a double rainbow, is...impressed! Or at least moderately enthused, for sure. And it's all thanks to the imminent magic of the MTV Video Music Awards, where she and other members of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team will be making an appearance and rubbing shoulders with their favorite stars—including Miley Cyrus, of whom McKayla is an avowed fan.

"I'm very excited to meet her," McKayla said at yesterday's press conference for the big event. "I've been watching her on TV since I was very little, and I love her music, and I'm just super-excited to get to even meet her."

"It was a crazy night in general for a lot of reasons," Taylor Swift tells MTV of her first performance at the Video Music Awards in 2009. Three years later, the pop star is headed back into the celeb-filled madness and will take the stage at the VMAs on Thursday, September 6 to bust out the first-ever live performance of a new tune from her upcoming album, Red.

If you've been congratulating yourself on having finally gotten the insanely catchy chorus of "Call Me Maybe" out of your head...well, good for you! And enjoy it while it lasts, 'cause it won't be long before we stuff it right back in there. The song is just one of the year-defining earworms to get a nomination nod from the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, along with a lot of familiar tunes and favorite faces.

Among the nominees are Hollywood Crush regulars Rihanna and Katy Perry, facing off for Video of the Year, as well as Best Female Video (and that's just the tip of the iceberg for Ri-Ri, who leads the pack with five nominations total). Also on the radar: Justin Bieber and his latest hit, "Boyfriend," for Best Male Video; One Direction and Frank Ocean for Best New Artist; and, of course, Gotye and the impossible-to-stop-singing "Somebody That I Used to Know" (sing it with us now: USED TO KNOOOOOOO-OW!)
