When you think of Aly & AJ, one of the last names that might come to mind is Alfred Hitchcock. And when you think of Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly, blood and gore isn’t exactly the order of the day. But next September, all these diverse forces will come together for "The Roomate," a movie a “Single White Female” storyline and hopes to terrify a new generation with a classic scene revolving around two key words: bloody bellybutton.
“I think it’s exciting to be able to continue to do our music, but at the same time branch out into our own acting careers,” explained Aly Michalka recently, proud of not only her and AJ’s new band name (78violet), but also movie careers that recently had Aly shoot “Roommate” with Leighton, Minka and Cam Gigandet. "'Roommate' was super cool to shoot with Leighton and Minka. They were sweet girls, and I had a fun time doing my crazy shower scene.”

They’re old enough to vote now. They’re expanding their acting careers by taking on more adult-oriented roles. And now, pop sensations Aly (pictured, far right) and AJ even have a new name.
“An interesting thing that we announced recently on Twitter — which we’re super hooked on now — was the changing of our band name. We’re not ‘Aly & AJ’ anymore,” explained Alyson Michalka when we caught up with her recently on the set of her 2010 comedy "The Easy A." "Now, we’re '78Violet.'" In one of her first interviews since the 20-year-old Aly and her 18-year-old sister made the name change official, Alyson explained what their new moniker means. “We were throwing around numbers, and 7 and 8 are our lucky numbers. They just mean a lot of different things to us,” she reasoned. “And violet — we wanted an alter ego for this [upcoming] record, and who we are on stage — and violet stuck out. The meaning of 'violet' is so interesting, if you Google the numbers 78 and violet separately, there’s so many different meanings that number has and the color violet, and how powerful it is." "Bandslam" finds an assortment of high school kids from different cliques coming together for one purpose...to rock the hell out for the annual Battle of the Bands contest. The film stars "High School Musical" cutie Vanessa Hudgens, and while she isn't in the clip below, pretty much everyone else in the flick is, including rising star and blonde bombshell Alyson Michalka.
