Second only to the art of making out in a torrential downpour, the ability to affect a convincing smolder must be a top-line resume item for any actor looking to land the lead in a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. Obviously. And so it was that Josh Duhamel, star of "Safe Haven," taught himself to brood with the best of them.
"Lots and lots of rehearsal in the mirror," Duhamel told MTV News of his preparation for the film. "Tape recording my voice into a tape recorder. Playing it back. 'Hmm, not quite smoldery enough.' I'd do it again until I'm ready for Nicholas Sparks, and that was the extent of my preparation for this film. Lots of vanity."
If you're spending today without a Valentine, we know how easy it can be to just give in to the loneliness. To embrace the single lady stereotype. To binge on ice cream and Fritos, while watching indie romances on Netflix and sobbing into the T-shirt your ex-boyfriend left at your house in 2008, and finally end up in the emergency room after a desperate, unsuccessful attempt to make out with your pet parakeet.
Oh, yes. WE KNOW. But before you call it quits on all things red-hot and romantic, perhaps you'd like to consider spending your Valentine's Day with one of three very eligible bachelors? With more than a dozen novels of the romantic persuasion to his name, there's no denying author Nicholas Sparks knows a thing or two about love—something that will be further apparent when his latest big-screen adaptation, "Safe Haven" (starring Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough) opens on Valentine's Day.
In celebration of the film, we're giving away a date night worthy of the King of Romance. Try this on for size: One lucky winner will receive a $100 gift card for Open Table and a $30 Fandango gift card to woo the one they love!
Fair warning, you guys: If you don't want to know all the secrets about the thrilling denouement of the new Nicholas Sparks novel-based movie "Safe Haven," you should stop reading now, and you should definitely not watch this awesome EXCLUSIVE video we got during our behind-the-scenes set visit with actors Julianne Hough, Josh Duhamel, and David Lyons.
But if you don't mind a few spoilers, including the truth about the leading lady's big scary secret, and a peek at the explosive action of one of the film's final scenes, then you won't want to miss this inside look at "Safe Haven."
Get ready to feel really, achingly insecure about your boyfriend, your relationship and (hey, why not?) your taste in bikinis: The trailer for "Safe Haven," the new Nicholas Sparks novel-gone-bigscreen is here, and in typical fashion, is going to show you all the things you never knew you wanted. Namely: to go on the lam from the cops, end up in a sleepy seaside town in North Carolina and have a whirlwind romance with an achingly attractive widower who just wants to kiss the pain right outta you!
The trailer opens with a panting, fleeing Julianne Hough, who hops on a departing bus just in time to make her escape from the police. What'd she do? Nope, they won't tell you, but it must have been reeeeeally bad—so bad that she had to cut her hair in a bus station bathroom and make a vow to never love anyone again, ever. But she can't keep her guard up forever, and especially not when the small town she picked to start over in just happens to have a Josh Duhamel in it, and he thinks she's really pretty and wants to give her a bicycle.

Taking a moment to goof around during work can help break up a long day—hey, we all do it once in awhile! If Josh Duhamel's tweet from today is any indication, the stars like to take the occasional break from working to let loose just as much as we do.
We're sure that the "serious business" is happening when the cameras are rolling, but all we're seeing here is some serious fun. As Josh mentions, he and co-star Julianne Hough are currently filming "Safe Haven," adapted from the Nicholas Sparks book of the same name. The movie is about a woman (that's Julianne!) who rolls into a North Carolina town, making the small community both intrigued and suspicious of her arrival.
Much as we primarily rely on Nicholas Sparks novels-turned-movies to provide a never-ending supply of unattainable fake boyfriends for us to drool over, you really can't have a too-good-to-be-true romance without somebody for the Fake Boyfriend to fall in love with! So it's a good thing that "Safe Haven," the next Sparks story in line to get the cinematic treatment, and which previously announced the casting of Josh Duhamel as its leading man, has found an appealing young actress to fit the bill!
Variety has the report that Julianne Hough, who we last saw shaking her moneymaker in "Footloose," will take on the role of the mysterious woman whose arrival awakens the interest and suspicion of a small town.
With "The Lucky One" now out in theaters, it only makes sense that Hollywood's attention would turn to the all-important question...of which Nicholas Sparks novel should be given the big-screen treatment next. And according to Variety, your new Aspirational Nicholas Sparks Boyfriend will be—drumroll, please!—the widowed hottie father from the Southern-style romance "Safe Haven"!
Set in North Carolina, "Safe Haven" is the story of a woman who arrives unexpectedly in a small town where she knows no one—and where she remains lonely and unconnected until the love of a handsome widower with two small children tempts her to put down roots. (Prediction: She's trying to escape a mysterious and painful past which will nevertheless come back to haunt her just in time to interrupt her budding relationship with Local Guy. Are we right?)
